HOBE SOUND — Southbound Interstate 95 has reopened at the Bridge Road interchange after a wreck this morning, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
The traffic camera at mile marker 96.5 shows traffic is now flowing at 12:20 p.m., but other cameras show traffic is still backed up for a few miles.
The wreck happened about 9 a.m. today, and involved a tractor-trailer, according to the FDOT. The wreck kept I-95 closed until about 12:15 p.m. and the highway was clogged for about 45 more minutes until the backed up traffic could dissipate.
Before the highway reopened, traffic was exiting at the Bridge Road off-ramp, then getting right back on at the Bridge Road on-ramp to get around the wreck, according to John Belding, Martin County Fire Rescue division chief and public information officer.
One victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Belding said.
“Apparently a tractor-trailer was involved with a pick-up truck and possibly a passenger sedan, so it was a three-motor vehicle accident,” Belding said. “There was a fuel leak from the tractor-trailer on scene and our hazmat materials response team responded out there to help contain that. The (state) Department of Transportation responded as well, DOT, to assist us and help clear the roadway.”
“Sounds like a pretty good mess out there,” Belding said, “so they’re going to take their time trying to get it untangled everywhere else.”
The amount of fuel spilled is unclear, but he said it likely wouldn’t exceed 150 gallons.
“It sounds like they had it contained pretty quickly,” added Belding, “but we’re using our hazmat team to assist them.”
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
To avoid this accident, motorists could exit at I-95 at Exit 102 at High Meadow Avenue, make a left on Martin Highway and a left at Martin Downs Boulevard into the entrance for Florida's Turnpike.
