Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a late Saturday afternoon crash that killed a Vero Beach man after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a sport utility vehicle in the 2200 block of 12th Street.
William Roger Brown, 25, was riding a 1999 Honda motorcycle westbound on the two-lane road when an eastbound 2001 Lincoln Navigator driven by 81-year-old Joseph Anthony Gomez made a left turn ahead of the bike, troopers report.
Brown attempted to avoid a collision, they said, but the bike fell on its left side. The motorcycle slid into the passenger side of the Navigator and burst into flames.
Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. Early information provided by law enforcement erroneously reported that the then-unnamed motorcyclist was from out of town.
Gomez, of Vero Beach, received minor injuries in the crash, troopers reported, and was taken to Indian River Medical Center.
Neither the motorcycle nor SUV had any other people on board.
