Truck hits bridge in Vero Beach at State Road 5 & Old Dixie Highway

VERO BEACH, Fla. - UPDATE: The section of Old Dixie Hwy and the Northbound lane of State Road 5 will remain closed until further notice. Florida Highway Patrol says an engineer deemed the bridge unsafe.

Authorities in Indian River County said Thursday that a truck loaded with materials hit a bridge, causing structural damage.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. at State Road 5 and Old Dixie Highway.

At noon Thursday, all northbound lanes of Dixie Highway are closed in the area.  One northbound lane of State Road 5 is also closed.

The driver of the truck, identified by Treasure Coast Newspapers as Lawrence Edward Vanhouten, 53, of Fort Pierce, suffered minor injuries, said officials.

He faces five charges including leaving the scene of a crash, operating a vehicle with a disqualified license and careless driving, said the Department of Highway Safety.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol website, the wreck is being classified as a hit-and-run.

For detours, drivers should use Indrio Road northbound and Highlands Drive southbound.
