St. Lucie County Sheriff warns of sweepstakes scam

New letters and emails targeting St. Lucie County residents may announce big winnings but St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara warns this is just the latest variation on an old scam.

"If you receive an official-looking letter or e-mail message telling you you've won a large sum of money, and enclosing an official-looking check and asking you to wire money to someone, don't," the sheriff said in a release.

In recent weeks, several people have called the sheriff's office in regards to a scam that includes a letter telling the recipient that they've won a sweepstakes prize of hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.

The letter also comes with a check for a few thousand dollars with instructions on making a deposit and a wire transfer for a "processing fee."

"The last thing I want to see is one of our hard working citizens lose any money to a scam such as this. So please, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," the sheriff said in a statement.
