Officers raid Vero Beach pain clinic on U.S. 1

One of several clinics being raided

The biggest pill mill crackdown in state history has ties to the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.

Vero Beach Doctor Bruce Kammerman was arrested Wednesday at Stuart Pain Management, a pain clinic on US-1 in Vero Beach.

Dr. Kammerman is accused of prescribing hundreds of thousands of pills illegally.

As part of Operation Pill Street Blues, 12 people were arrested statewide and two could turn themselves in by Wednesday night.

According to the DEA, Kammerman sold oxycodone and valium to thousands of patients, without truly checking their medical status first.

Investigators say the clinic was part of a much bigger picture.

7 clinics were raided Wednesday and the DEA says Pompano Beach firefighter Lewis Stouffer was running all of them.

Millions of dollars were made of the backs of prescription drug addicts says both the DEA and state attorney general. Mark Trouville, Special Agent in charge of Miami's DEA field division said,
"We'll continue to pursue and arrest those clinic owners and employees and doctors who are posing as health care professionals, who hide behind their white coats and diplomas while spreading misery for profit."

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said, "These defendants are despicable. They're sickening and they're worse than your typical defendants. You know why? They should be held to a higher standard because many of them have the name doctor."

Two doctors arrested Wednesday face manslaughter charges after a man overdosed on prescription drugs sold at Stuart Pain Management.
