INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A man shot in front of a house north of Vero Beach late Saturday afternoon is in stable condition after undergoing surgery, an Indian River County Sheriff's spokesman said Sunday.
The unidentified man was shot in a front yard near 34th Court and 45th Street about 5:50 p.m. Saturday. He was taken by car to Indian River Medical Center and then flown in a helicopter to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute.
He was the second Vero Beach-area shooting victim on Easter weekend.
John Ross, 29, of Vero Beach, was fatally shot early Saturday at his brother's home in the 1900 block of 38th Lane. He was pronounced dead at Indian River Medical Center.
Police said they didn't know whether Ross was living with his brother.
The victim's brother, Scott Collins, 24, was charged with possession of cocaine after police found a gram of the drug in his bedroom.
Police also recovered a gun at the scene but a forensic examination must be done to determine if it was used to shoot Ross, officials said.
Police described Collins as "a person of interest" in his brother's fatal shooting but haven't charged him with anything except the drug offense.
An autopsy on Ross is scheduled for Monday.
Investigators canvassed the areas around both crime scenes Saturday and Sunday, interviewing potential witnesses, said Jeff Luther, sheriff's spokesman.
