INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. - The Indian River County School District is investigating why a 5-year-old Glendale Elementary School student was dropped at the wrong bus stop Tuesday evening by her bus driver.
Jaire Sanders says her 5-year-old daughter, Symphony, was dropped off more than 2 miles away from where she says she was supposed to be dropped off. Sanders says Symphony may have been alone for nearly an hour before she was found.
"From what I was told by the school, she was put on the bus and sent home. That's where the ball was dropped," said Sanders.
Sanders says Symphony was supposed to be dropped off at her Grandmother’s house.
When she never arrived, Sanders says Symphony’s grandmother called police and filed a missing juvenile report.
Sanders said about an hour after the girl was reported missing, a friend of hers in the neighborhood where Symphony was dropped off found her.
"[Symphony] just so happened to see her and say ‘oh my god I know this person’ and went to them," Sanders explained.
Sanders says she’s thankful Symphony was found by a friend, not a stranger. She wants to make sure this doesn’t happen again to her daughter, or anyone else.
Sanders said her daughter had stayed late after school on Tuesday for an all-new after school learning program.
The Indian River County School District says the program just started Tuesday. They say there is one bus to take students in that program home when it ends around 5 P.M.
Being that the program just started Tuesday, the school district also says it was the first day that bus driver had taken the new after school route.
The district is investigating whether or not that had anything to do with Symphony being dropped off at the wrong bus stop.
Sanders says her expectations should have been clear to the school district. “I said for you to drop her off here, for her grandmother to get her, for her to be home safe. That didn’t happen,” Sanders said.
The Indian River County School District has removed the bus driver from that route pending the results of the investigation.
