K.D. Smith Jr.: Victim identified in overnight Vero Beach homicide

VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Indian River County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide that occurred Monday morning.

A man, identified as K.D. Smith Jr., 66, was shot to death sometime before 4 a.m. at a home located in the 300 block of 6th Road Southwest in Vero Beach.

Police said they received a 911 call from a woman about the shooting, which occurred in the driveway of the residence.

Smith was transported to the Indian River Medical Center where he died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

Detectives said before the shooting, Smith worked his usual shift at the Gifford night club Chocolate City. After the club closed, Smith drove himself to his friend's house.   

Smith did not live at this residence where the shooting occurred.

Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said in a news release, "K.D. Smith Jr. was well known in our local community. Our hearts go out to his friends and family in this difficult time. Our detectives have worked tirelessly to bring Mr. Smith's killer to justice. We will find who did this and get them off the streets."

Detectives are asking anyone who was at Chocolate City on the evening of July 20, and may have witnessed any events that led to Smith's death to come forward with information.
