Former Vero Beach man charged with carjacking in Fort Myers

A man convicted of carjacking, who recently lived in Vero Beach, was charged with the same crime in Fort Myers on Sunday, police there said.

Michael T. Coleman, 32, served two years in jail for a carjacking conviction in Lee County, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. He was released in April 2009 and registered at a residence in the 800 block of Fourth Court, Vero Beach.

Sunday, Fort Myers police said Coleman committed another carjacking at a gas station. The incident began when Coleman, under the influence of an unknown substance, jumped out of the window of a second-story apartment, injuring his arm, police said. A Mazda sports-utility driver told police Coleman flagged him down for help and indicated he was injured. After the driver stopped, Coleman forced him out of the car and sped away, according to a police report.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and the Lee County Sheriff's Office joined the pursuit and stopped Coleman in downtown Fort Myers, officers said. Police said Coleman's last known address was in Cape Coral.
