Claire Danskin, Vero Beach High School teacher arrested for DUI at school

VERO BEACH — Foreign language teacher Claire Danskin raised some eyebrows in the Vero Beach High School faculty parking lot when she parked her Toyota straddling two parking spaces, struck an art teacher's van and walked away with her car still running, according to a Vero Beach police report.

Officers arrived and took Danskin, 60, into custody for driving under the influence with property damage. Authorities said Danskin, who had no alcohol in her system according to a blood alcohol content test, was under the influence of medication.

Someone who saw Danskin parking called police to the high school, located at 1707 16th Street, Vero Beach, at 7:18 a.m. Thursday. Danskin, of the 100 block of Coply Terrace, Sebastian, returned to the parking lot and talked with the officer, though she had trouble keeping her balance, according to her arrest affidavit.

Danskin was charged with DUI after failing most of the sobriety exercises, including two attempts to recite the alphabet, police said

The teacher told officers she took a pain pill and had a glass of wine Wednesday night, then took medication for high blood pressure Thursday morning, her affidavit states.

Danskin posted $500 bail at the Indian River County Jail Thursday.
