Bodyboarders surf, despite closure of Indian River County beaches

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Jason Doyle and Carlos Jenkins drove to Indian River County from Brevard County, seeking the right conditions for their favorite extreme sport.

"Vero Beach is probably the best big-wave spot in Florida," said Doyle.

He claims body boarding was meant for massive swells.

"Comes in, and it gets steep and then barrels," he explained. "When it barrels, that's where you want to be."

He says Vero Beach's sandbar is the perfect setting for high surf, so it's worth the trip.

"There's a big trench off the coast here. That's why Vero Beach and the Treasure Coast have harder waves than Melbourne," said Doyle.

Officials in Indian River County say rough surf could be dangerous, no matter how much waterspout experience you have.

All beaches have been closed off to beachgoers, swimmers and surfers.
