One dead in crash at rural Indian River County bridge construction site

Jogger discovered the wreckage

The Florida Highway Patrol Saturday morning was investigating a single-car crash that claimed the life of one person near a rural intersection that has been closed to replace a canal bridge.

A jogger discovered the wreckage of a four-door car where it had crashed into a front-end loader parked on 82nd Avenue, just south of the intersection at Fourth Street, said Trooper Lawrence Quinto. The road is barricaded and closed to traffic at First Street Southwest, but there are tire tracks on the grassy east shoulder of the two-lane pavement where vehicles appear to have circumvented those barriers.

The FHP was notified by the Indian River County Sheriff's Office around 9:50 a.m. Quinto said the car contained a single body that, due to the nature of the crash, could not be immediately identified as male or female.

There were no passengers found in the car, he added.

A traffic homicide investigator was en route to the scene Saturday morning.
