FELLSMERE — A naked man who attempted to break into a home Thursday was found by police in the back seat of a car with stolen jumper cables, according to an affidavit.
A couple in the 200 block of South Mulberry Street called 911 about 2:40 a.m. Thursday when Michael Sherlock, 25, of the 4500 block of First Street, Vero Beach, tried breaking through two windows at their home, the affidavit states. The wife said Sherlock cracked the glass of a bedroom window and demanded she let him in, she told Fellsmere police.
Sherlock moved to the outside of a kitchen window and used a knife to cut through the screen, the husband told police. The husband grabbed a chair and swung it toward the window, which prompted Sherlock to flee, the affidavit states.
Police arrived and found a silver tank top, cargo shorts, some tennis shoes and a pair of red underwear in the yard. The husband said his jumper cables and some tools were missing from his pickup, according to the affidavit.
An Indian River County Sheriff's deputy assisted with the search for Sherlock and found him sleeping in a car parked in the 200 block of South Willow Street, located directly behind the home on Mulberry, he said. The stolen jumper cables were lying next to him, the report states.
Sherlock did not own the car he was found sleeping in, police said. The residents of the home on Mulberry and the owner of the car on Willow said they did not know who he was.
Sherlock told police he was intoxicated and didn't know why he was nude in Fellsmere, the affidavit states.
Police charged him with burglary, aggravated assault, trespassing, petty theft and criminal mischief. He remained at the Indian River County Jail Friday in lieu of $21,500 bail.
