Teen burned over 60% of his body after spray can tossed into a bonfire explodes

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. - Oslo Middle School student Michael Brewer is in the burn unit at a Miami Hospital.

The Indian River County Sheriff's Office says on Saturday Michael and a group of kids were at a friend's house when they started a bonfire. Michael told investigators someone threw a spray can into the fire. He tried to remove it, but it exploded. Sixty percent of Michael's body was burned.

Oslo Middle School principal Eric Seymour said, "I think that Michael is very strong and he will get through this. We do have photos of him and he is going through the battles but we know that he is capable of doing it and then too we are going to support him and we are going to stay around him until he does."

Michael had his second surgery Thursday and is expected to be in the hospital the next couple of months.

His civics teacher Trey Deller is organizing a fundraiser to help Michael's family pay the medical bills. Deller said, "It made me really proud to be a teacher, because it is the reason we do what we do and everyone here, once we found out, so many people have stepped up to the plate."

Michael's mother Jennifer Bell says the money will help, but she knows there's a long road ahead of them. “We don't know what to do next. What don't even have a way home when he gets released and they are talking about him going to a rehab center afterward."

The Sheriff's Office says they don't believe anything criminal in nature happened at the bonfire. They will be closing their investigation soon.
