Indian River County firefighter, Dustin Hawkins, was released from an Orlando burn unit

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. - An Indian River County firefighter, who is recovering from severe burns, was released from an Orlando burn center Thursday.

Dustin Hawkins is recovering from third degree burns on his face, neck, and forearms after a flash fire last Thursday.

Fellow firefighters visited Hawkins while he was in the hospital this week to show their support.

He released this statement to NewsChannel 5's Meghan McRoberts on Friday:

I wanted to thank you and your staff, as well as all of your viewing members for all of your kind thoughts and prayers. I am currently at home with my family recovering and getting familiar with my new arms. The staff at the burn unit was absolutely wonderful and are the most amazing nurses and doctors I have ever encountered. The outpouring of support from our community and all of my brothers and sisters in the fire service from all different departments has been an absolute blessing. I am healing well and looking forward to getting back to being a firefighter again so that I can help the community that has been so loving and supportive to my family in this difficult time. Thank you for all of your compassion and support.
