Florida Organic Aquaculture shrimp farm coming to Fellsmere

It may not be the first thing you think of when you hear the word "farm," but a new company on the Treasure Coast is hoping to make it big farming shrimp.

Florida Organic Aquaculture plans to bring in 60 to 70 jobs by raising large shrimp on site at its new facility in Fellsmere.

This location will allow the company to move its product from farm to restaurant tables throughout South and Central Florida within 6 hours of harvest.

"They're not going to be frozen and put on a plane and flown half way across the world after being bathed in antibiotics,"  Florida Organic Aquaculture Vice President Mike Gowen said.

The project also includes three pole barns where the shrimp will be raised.  These will be the largest structures of its type in the country.

The first harvest is scheduled for November with an expected output of 2.2 million pounds of shrimp annually.
