FELLSMERE, Fla. - The largest closed-water shrimp production facility in the United States is expected to bring more than 500 jobs to the Treasure Coast.
The facility, located on County Road 512 in Fellsmere, first broke ground in April 2013.
Florida Organic Aquaculture says their facility is a 4.3-acre operation roughly the size of three football fields.
The facility will produce fresh, never frozen shrimp for restaurants, fishing charters boats and grocery chains throughout the country.
The company says it’s all done environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient system. The shrimp is never frozen and is raised without chemicals or preservatives.
Visitors to the plant on May 7 will be able to witness a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour the facility located in northwestern Indian River County.
