Off-duty Boynton Beach police officer injured in Southern Blvd. crash

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - An off-duty Boynton Beach police officer injured in an early-morning crash remains hospitalized Friday evening.

Officer Richard Webster was on his way home from work when another vehicle struck him from behind. The impact sent the officer's car into a palm tree.

The crash shut westbound Southern Boulevard at Military Trail for a couple of hours.

Witnesses told PBSO deputies that they watched a driver going very fast on Southern.  The driver was going west while approaching the Haverhill Road overpass.

Witnesses told police that the driver rear-ended Webster's vehicle, sending him into the center median where he hit the palm tree.

Webster was airlifted to  Delray Medical Center where he is now listed in stable condition.

Authorities say the driver believed to be at fault was not wearing a seatbelt and was not seriously  hurt.
