West Palm Beach Police want to make sure you're safe the next time you head out for a jog.

November is National Runner Safety month and officers held a safety class teaching people to protect themselves.

Wednesday evening Rachel Mathias continued her training for a half marathon this Sunday.

She always makes sure to run during the daytime.

"Sunrise or sunset, but there would still be some light in the sky," says Mathias.

Many runners may be out on South Florida's roads at nighttime, especially this time of year.

That's why Officer Seth Buxton with the West Palm Beach Police Department wants to remind you, safety first.

"You should be thinking what if," says Buxton.

He gave a packed room at Run and Roll in West Palm Beach tips to protect themselves.

"Running against traffic, alternating your route," he said.

He also encouraged people to run without headphones especially at night.

He just wants people to be proactive this running season.

"Just want you to exercise common sense and good judgement," says Buxton.

The department is also planning a hands-on training self defense class in the coming months.
