West Palm Beach launches 'Open Access' campaign, gets more social on Twitter and Facebook

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -  West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio is launching an "Open-Access" campaign. It is the latest example of how local government is becoming more transparent in the age of social media.

The biggest departure from what we are used to seeing is that the city is now putting out information on Twitter and Facebook before they send official press releases to the media.

However, by going to social media first, the city is able to get its side of the story out unfiltered. Critics say the down side to this is that the public is losing out because the public can't ask the tough questions.

As part of the new campaign, Mayor Muoio, along with city commissioners, will hold monthly Twitter Town Hall meetings. The first Twitter Town Hall meeting will be held on Monday, September 24 at 7:00 pm. Residents can use the hashtag #askmuoio to participate.

On Thursday night, September 20, there will be a traditional town hall meeting. The non-high-tech meeting will be held at the South Olive Community Center at 6:00 pm.

West Palm Beach is also starting something called "Morning Joe with Mayor Muoio" to give locals a chance to chat about issues on their mind over a cup of coffee. The first "coffee talk" will be on Friday, September 21 at 8:00 am at Harold's Coffee in Northwood.
