Uber announces uberX service to West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Want another way to get around? Uber announced it is bringing its uberX car service to West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

Uber is an app where an average person can act like a taxi service. Once cleared by a background check, drivers can pick up and drop off customers with their own cars.

It's a way for people to make some extra cash. Uber will offer fixed rates instead of metered prices like area taxis do.

The company says its uberX offers Uber reliability with prices 27% cheaper than a taxi.

Uber became available in Miami and Orlando earlier this year and has met resistance.

Miami-Dade has impounded eight vehicles and issued 63 citations saying it isn’t legal for drivers without the proper licenses and registrations to pick up passengers. Uber says this hasn't slowed down their business.

In Orlando police have issued tickets to Uber drivers for not having a vehicle permit or driver permit.
