Race organizers say 12,000 participants are expected locally at the 23rd annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Last year, $800,000 in grant money was given to Palm Beach, Saint Lucie and Martin counties to provide various research and preventative services in the community.
Komen funded mammograms diagnosed 47 breast cancers in this community last year.
While some women have walked in the race before to support their friends or family members, others walked as a survivor for the first time today.
"I'm a one year survivor, as of today actually this time last year, the day after the race was my last chemo treatment, so excited to be here this year," said Brie Suncine, part of Florida Power and Light's survivor team.
