Shooting involving a father and son in the 600 block of Neil Road in suburban West Palm Beach, Fla., on Jan. 21, 2014.
SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Palm Beach County Sheriff's detectives charged Sherman Weeks with aggravated battery with a firearm Tuesday after they say he shot his father at their Neil Road home.
Witnesses say Weeks took off out the back door of the apartment and that deputies arrested him a few blocks away near Military Trail.
"I really don't think he tried to hurt his dad even though it looks like that. I think he needs some help," family friend Elizabeth Black said.
Black and other neighbors say Weeks was hit by a car about a year ago and has suffered from mental issue since then.
"This kid has mental issues. None of us would expect this would happen, but I hope he gets some help," Black said.
A spokeswoman with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says they are looking into the incident and whether the suspect has mental issues.
She says a judge could order a mental health evaluation and if necessary the suspect could be housed in the mental health part of the jail.
PBSO says the father is at Delray Medical Center and is expected to survive.
Friends are relieved, but want his son to get treatment.
"What the family does want is for him to get some help. I really think that no man wants to shoot their dad," Black said.
Weeks is expected to be in first appearance Wednesday.
