WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The bag pipes were leading the way for a somber memorial ceremony.
On Friday, family members paid tribute to Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputies who lost their lives in the line of duty. One by one, the names of those who lost their lives were called out. "George C. Douglass, August 27th, 1921."
The first fallen hero-- George Douglass, was killed during a robbery investigation near Clewiston. Family members, like Luel Miller said the suspect was never caught. "It is important for us to come and honor his memory and what he gave."
As the helicopters flew above, Douglass' family members were reminded of how much they miss the fallen heroes.
Jolyn Fitzsimmons said, "I think family history, family tradition is very important to us being native Floridians. But I also think that they serve and they give their lives and I think it's important that you recognize the individuals that continue to serve this country, serve this state. Serve their counties or cities."
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said, "What this means is that we don't forget the people who laid down their lives. But what's more important is that the families are here and we make sure that they know we will never forget the sacrifice that those family members gave to us."
