Pedestrian killed in suburban West Palm Beach

SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - An elderly man was killed Tuesday evening as he attempted to cross the eastbound lanes of Okeechobee Boulevard near North Military Trail, according to Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

The victim was struck by a Toyota Corolla a few minutes before 8 p.m., Barbera said.

The eastbound lanes of Okeechobee Boulevard were closed for a couple of hours.

This is the latest accident involving a pedestrian at this intersection.  

On September 23, PBSO posted on the department's Facebook page that in the past 18 months there has been an increase in pedestrians struck by vehicles and traffic accidents near the intersection of Okeechobee Boulevard and North Military Trail.

According to PBSO, there have been 87 hit-and run accidents without injuries, 663 traffic crashes without injuries, nine hit-and-run accidents with injuries and 99 traffic accidents with injuries.

Many of these crashes involved pedestrians, either directly or indirectly, according to PBSO.

All the accidents happened on Okeechobee Boulevard between Congress Avenue and the Florida's Turnpike.
