WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Passersby saved the life of a young woman who crashed her car into a canal this morning.
The woman, 18, was northbound on Interstate 95 near Forest Hill Boulevard shortly after 9 a.m. when she ran off the road and over-corrected, said Capt. Don DeLucia of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.
Her car then traveled back across the interstate lanes and into the canal on the opposite side of the road, landing on its roof, he said.
Six people stopped, jumped into the water and flipped the car onto its side. The woman had a small pocket of air and the car was not totally submerged, but the rescuers "basically saved her life," DeLucia said.
One of the rescuers had a trailer hitch and pulled her car out of the water, he said.
