West Palm police have identified the person shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting Saturday night.
The city spokesman says he was 39-year-old Anthony Lamar Brown.
According to officials, the officer was responding to a report of a stolen bicycle near Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard. Police say a caller to 911 reported his bicycle was stolen at gunpoint and a detailed description of the bike was given.
Police say a short time later the officer spotted Brown riding the bike and ordered him to stop near the 500 block of 15th St. Brown refused to stop and cursed at the officer, police say.
Police say when the officer confronted Brown, a fight broke. The officer then tried to use a Taser on Brown but it had no effect.
Brown then pulled out a gun and began shooting at the officer, according to police.
Police say the officer returned fire striking Brown who later died at St. Mary's Medical Center.
Brown’s weapon was recovered at the scene, along with two loaded magazines, police say.
According to police, the officer received minor injuries.
"The officer's been on the department for I think about a year and a half and I'm not aware of any history of him deploying weapons," said West Palm Beach Police Chief Bryan Kummerlen.
The officer is expected to be identified on Monday.
There is no word on how many shots were fired at the time of the shooting.
The shooting is still under investigation.
According to the Palm Beach Post , Palm Beach County Jail records show Brown was arrested in 2000 for possession of cocaine and later that year for domestic aggravated assault with a knife. He was arrested in 2005 on a battery charge. He was booked in August 2013 on charges of resisting an officer with violence, trespassing and loitering, and was sentenced to time served.
