Benefit walk at Okeeheelee Middle School
GREENACRES, Fla. - For the first time, Brian Thomas watched people run rather than run in a race himself.
The Okeeheelee Middle School science teacher is battling skin cancer, which has weakened his body and caused him to not to be able to teach for the rest of the school year.
To support him in his fight, 200 students, teachers and people from the community participated in the Brian Thomas 5K run.
Seeing the outpouring of support from people brought Thomas to tears.
Normally it is him who is running to support someone else in their fight against cancer.
Last year, he and two former students ran 1,700 miles to Michigan to raise money for colon cancer research.
Thomas said that run was inspired by another Okeeheelee Middle School teacher, Julie Greene, who was diagnosed with colon cancer.
The runners raised nearly $20,000 for colon cancer research.
Now people are raising money for him and his fight against melanoma.
Thomas was diagnosed with the disease over spring break, which surprised the entire Okeeheelee Middle School community.
Thomas said that community is what is going to help him beat the cancer.
