Mom and pop stores get in on the action at the Palm Beach Outlets

Hilfiger. Nike. Jcrew... and Lexon?

After years of planning, Leigh and her husband have finally taken the plunge.

The West Palm Beach couple opened their first store, Lexon, at the Palm Beach Outlets. "This is our first shot at doing retail on our own."

The owners of the locally owned stores at the mall hope their sales will benefit from the foot traffic the bigger stores bring. By 4 p.m. more than 35,000 people had stopped at the mall.

"It's really different. We hope people will support them. You know what.. if its priced well and its good quality.. we will buy," a Lexon shopper said.

Leigh wants to keep the small business feel but attract a big clientele.

"We're excited we can still be local but hopefully benefit from some of the crowds these malls draw."

The owners here say locally owned businesses were offered a temporary lease option since they are taking a financial risk as first time business owners.
