WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A memorial took place on Saturday in memory of Jasmine Jahanshahi, a Dreyfoos School of the Arts graduate who was died in an apartment fire in Paris.
Friends and family gathered at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens located at 253 Barcelona Road in West Palm Beach.
After graduating from Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach in 2008, Jasmine went on to study political science and international law at U-C Berkeley.
The junior was accepted in a year-long prestigious study-abroad program and called Paris home for the last several months.
Jasmine, along with four others, died trying to escape a fire in an apartment building in Paris. According to the Associated Press, 57 additional people were injured in the fire.
As Jasmine's family remembers and honors her life and legacy, they want to promote fire safety as a way to make something good happen out of the tragedy.
"We would like to see how we can positively impact other people's lives by providing fire safety to them and also to make sure that we can prevent this accident from happening to other young kids," said Mehrnaz Djhanshahi, Jasmine's mother.
Instead of flowers, donations are being accepted for the purchase of fire escape ladders for low income housing.
