Investigators say hockey dad ran onto the ice and attacked a child on the other team

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Delray Beach hockey dad Wednesday for child abuse after they say he went onto the ice and attacked a child.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Dr. Matthew Supran, who also identifies himself on his website as the hockey team's chiropractor, hit a child in the head.

"The parents get really worked up at these games. A lot of them say and do things they shouldn't do. But this went to a whole new level," the  alleged 14-year-old victim's mother Kristy Cardieri said.

Police reports say Dr. Supran was removed by referees and coaches after the incident at Palm Beach Skate Zone.

The report says he went on the attack when Kristy's son knocked Supran's son down during the game; an act that resulted in a five minute penalty. The referee told police it was not a malicious play.

But investigators say Dr. Supran rushed the ice and attacked the child.

"This is hockey. Sometimes kids are going to get hit accidentally... it would never cross my mind to run across the ice and attack a child," Cardieri said.

Dr. Supran did not return calls Thursday and his receptionist said they would not be commenting.

But friends of the Delray Beach chiropractor are standing up for him.

"He is friendly, calm, and always concerned about everyone. I am surprised to hear that because if you knew him you would never expect that," friend and business neighbor Andre Gizzi said.

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office reports, the coach had to pull Dr. Supran off of the child.

"It is our job as parents to teach them how to behave and unfortunately now it is my job to teach my son that it is not okay to let an adult hit him," Cardieri said.

Supran is out of jail on $3,000 bond.
