Man arrested on cruelty toward child charges

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A suburban West Palm Beach man is facing cruelty toward child charges, after staffers of a day care facility called the authorities to report multiple bruises on a 4-year-old child last week.

Julio Cesar Hernandez Gonzalez, 19, is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond. He was arrested Thursday .

According to the arrest report, staffers of the Tiny Tots Day Care Center noticed several bruises on a 4-year-old child Aug. 12. They called the Florida Department of Children and Families and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators later learned that Hernandez is the live-in boyfriend of the 4-year-old's mother. During an interview with the child, the boy said Hernandez "hit him" and mentioned Hernandez by name.

The sheriff's detectives noted in the report that the 4-year-old had multiple bruises in his chest, shoulder, buttocks, thighs, forearms and biceps.

On Thursday, Hernandez agreed to be interviewed at the sheriff's office headquarters. There he told detectives that he had used a "white leather belt" on the 4-year-old after he had a "behavior problem at school." He denied grabbing or punching the child, but admitted to hitting him with the belt.

Hernandez was immediately taken into custody.
