Lawyers representing tennis star Venus Williams and the family of Jerome Barson agreed Tuesday that Williams’s cellphone records at the time of a deadly crash should be made available.
Lawyers at Steinger Iscoe & Greene representing the Barson family asked to have access to Williams’s cellphone records from the time of June 9 crash at the intersection of North Lake Boulevard and BallenIsles Drive.
Jerome Barson died two weeks after the collision.
T-Mobile will be subpoenaed for Williams’ records about an hour and a half before and after the crash, according to Michael Steinger.
“We believe there was some distraction that caused her to fail to enter timely and failed to just directly proceed on a green light,” Steinger said.
Court records show Barson's family is looking to include the phone records as part of their discovery in a wrongful death lawsuit against Williams.
“Actually we met with Ms. Williams’ attorneys in the hallway prior to the hearing,” Steinger said. “I think they understood the judge was likely going to grant this anyway so they came to an agreement with us and then the judge went ahead and entered that order.”
Palm Beach Gardens police concluded that Williams lawfully entered the intersection and she denies allegations that she was at fault.
