WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. A Jupiter woman charged with killing a 2-year-old girl in her bathtub has been ordered held without bail.
Police say 40-year-old Kimberly Lucas was the former domestic partner of the child's mother. An attorney for Lucas says she was considered the other mother of Elliana Lucas-Jamason and her 10-year-old brother.
Lucas is also charged with attempted murder of the boy, who police say was drugged. In court documents investigators identified the drug as benzodiazepine, which is used to treat anxiety.
Defense attorney Marc Shiner says Lucas' 21-year relationship ended in the past year. He says the family is "at a complete loss to try and figure out what happened."
According to court documents, Lucas left behind a note which said in part: “Lea’s (Pastor Lea Brown of Metropolitan Community Church in Palm Beach Gardens) sermon really, really touched me yesterday, but God never told me to stop!”
Investigators say Lucas was referring to Genesis 22, a Bible verse that she heard in church where God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son, but at the last minute stops him.
"The message of that sermon was the message of every sermon we have here, which is about the redemption and the healing that we can find in God's love even in the face of things we don't understand. And that's what the message was and whatever happened in her mind, only God knows," Brown said in an interview Tuesday night.
Church members were in court Wednesday. They said they were grieving and did not wish to comment.
