If you are a homeowner or a business owner, protecting your valuables just got a little easier.

On Monday, the West Palm Beach Police Department is introducing a high-tech tool called SmartWater CSI.

The product is a forensically-encoded liquid that homeowners or business owners will be able to spray directly on their valuables.

The liquid is invisible to the naked eye but can be detected under a blacklight.

So, if someone steals your property, and you have sprayed it with the liquid, police will be able to match it with the item’s owner.

West Palm Beach Police Chief Sarah Mooney said this could not only help prevent property crime but also solve it.

Police will distribute those SmartWater CSI kits starting Tuesday night in the Northwood Hills neighborhood.

Several distributions of SmartWater kits are scheduled in multiple neighborhoods with the potential for even more neighborhoods in the future.

Below are the following distribution dates and locations:

  • Sept. 18, 7 p.m.; Northwood Hills Neighborhood (Distribution site: Grace Episcopal Church, 3600 N. Australian Avenue)
  • Sept. 25, 6:30 p.m.; South End Neighborhoods including El Cid, Flamingo Park, Southland Park/Prospect Park; Grandview Heights; South End Neighborhood Association (Distribution site: Howard Park Community Center, 1302 Parker Ave.)
  • Sept. 29, 9:30 a.m.; Old Northwood (Distribution site: Old Northwood Community House, 3510 Spruce Ave.)
  • Oct. 27, - 10 a.m.; Riverwalk (Distribution site: Riverwalk Clubhouse, 7459 Riverwalk Circle)

Police said residents from only these communities may participate in the SmartWater CSI program.

Proof of address is required to attend the meeting and participate in the program.

Participants are encouraged to arrive on time for a brief, mandatory presentation prior to receiving their SmartWater CSI kit.

City residents and business owners who are interested in obtaining a SmartWater kit can contact the West Palm Beach Crime Prevention Office at (561) 822-1620.
