Florida legislature makes it easier for landlords to evict tenants

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The bill, which was recently passed by the Florida Legislature, would allow landlords to evict tenants for a partial rent payment.

It would also allow landlords to evict tenants if they break the rules twice in one year -- parking in the wrong parking spot or who having an unauthorized pet or guests.

People sign an agreement. They've signed a contract. These are the rules. And they really ought to follow the rules,"

Tom Duncan, president of Northwood University said. "I understand people need to make quick decisions sometimes about finding a place to live but, at the same time, we do live in the communities and the community rules probably ought to be abided by."

Approximately 33% of the people who live in Florida rent their homes.

The bill does not change the sometimes lengthy eviction process but it may shorten in the two instances.

The changes would go into effect on July 1st if Scott signs the bill.
