WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Elizabeth Diebel was only three-years-old when her dad went to work and never came home. Her father, officer Robert Edwards responded to a call for back-up when his patrol car was hit, killing him instantly.
"My mom was 27 when my dad died, with two young children so it was a big impact and very difficult for her," Diebel explained. "Growing up it was you know of course difficult to not be able to identify with my peers at a young age."
Elizabeth now works for the West Palm Beach Police Department as a volunteer coordinator, the same agency where her father worked for four years. Thirty-two years later, Diebel is honoring her dad and other fallen West Palm Beach Police Department officers.
"The West Palm Beach Police Memorial is put on to honor the officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in the line of duty to serve their community. We participate and now I'm helping to plan which is really a great honor."
Right now Diebel and other volunteers are putting the finishing touches on the event, before she heads home to carefully choose what to wear.
"Most people who are attending would dress in black and blue because it's significant for law enforcement."
And it's also significant for Diebel.
"Absolutely. That represents my dad and the sacrifice that he gave."
