WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A 35-year-old Tampa man is in the Palm Beach County Jail Wednesday evening after being arrested on charges of sexual battery of a victim under the age of 12, said Barry Golden, senior inspector and sex offender investigations coordinator at the U.S. Marshals Service Southern District in Miami.
Mace was arrested by members of the Marshals’ Sex Offender Task Force after receiving a tip from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office that Mace was working at 360 South Congress Avenue in West Palm Beach.
Mace allegedly molested an 8-year-old girl in 2012. However the victim did not come forward until recently because of fear, Golden said. He said that it appears that Mace may have been babysitting the child when the crime occurred.
During the arrest Mace told authorities that he had been volunteering at a West Palm Beach shelter for abused children and was also acting as a sports referee at a local university.
The Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office issued a warrant for Mace arrest on February 12.
Mace faces other charges in addition to sexual battery of a minor, Golden said.
