Child shooting investigated by Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting of an 18-month old child.

A sheriff’s office spokesperson says investigators think the crime scene is inside a car.

Investigators are unclear on the circumstances of how the child was shot.

Family members said the mother took the child to her sister's house after he was hit during a drive-by shooting along Quail Lake Drive at Live Oak Plantation Apartments on Quail Drive in suburban West Palm Beach.

Relatives say the aunt then drove the boy to Good Samaritan Medical Center.

The child was then transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center by Good Samaritan Medical Center staff.

"It's terrible. I mean you're talking about a baby, an innocent baby. It doesn't make no sense," said family friend Jeanette Vasquez.

A relative identified the child as Zi'ania Colins. The boy is now in surgery.

An aunt said one of the child's kidneys was removed during the operation.

More information will be added to this story as it becomes available.
