Chapel by the Lake: City may replace iconic, 50-year-old chapel with 25-story condominium

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Replace an iconic, 50-year-old chapel with a 25-story condominium? Or preserve its history?

On Monday, city commissioners are expected to decide whether to move ahead with plans to replace Chapel by the Lake in the 1100 block of South Flagler Drive with one of the priciest condominium projects in Palm Beach County history.

First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach, which owns the property, plans to sell the site for $23 million.

A developer would build a luxury, 327-foot tower with condominiums that sell for an average of $5 million.

At 5 p.m., the city commission will hold a public hearing  before it casts its first vote.
