Moment of silence planned Sunday for fallen polo great Carlos Gracida

A moment of silence followed by a rider-less horse procession for polo great Carlos Gracida will take place before Sunday's 3 p.m. polo match in Wellington.

Gracida, 53, a longtime resident of Wellington, died at Delray Medical Center Tuesday night after a freak accident on a Wellington polo field.

According to the International Polo Club Palm Beach website, Gracida's horse was accidentally struck in the head with another player's mallet. The animal then jerked its head and hit Gracida, who fell to the ground. The horse then rolled on top of him.

Gracida was a nine-time U.S. Open winner, five-time Argentine Open winner and five-time player of the year.
