School District of Palm Beach County mass one-way text messaging system will alert for emergencies

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. -- The School District of Palm Beach County wants to improve its contact with parents by adding an option for mass one-way text messaging.

The notification system will be used for district-related issues and emergencies, such as during a hurricane. 

Messages will include school-related details such as reminders about school events, details on student attendance and low lunch money balances.

When parents, guardians and staff members have been contacted in the past, it has been through email and mass phone messages. 

The district hopes the new addition to the "Parentlink" system will improve efficiency and safety. 

Currently the district is working to obtain cell phone contact information and permission from parents, guardians and staff members. 

Parents can find the details for signing up for text alerts on the New and Returning Student Registration form PBSO 0636 (link: ).

It will soon be presented through the "Edline" program as well, to confirm the contact information is correct.

Staff members are able to find the option in the Self Service portal in the "PeopleSoft" program. 

The district says it will take time to update the database with provided information for all parents and staff members in the country's 11th largest school district.
