RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - RIVIERA BEACH — One man is dead and two other seriously injured following a shooting Saturday in the 1600 block of West 26th Court.
According to Riviera Beach police, the three men were sitting in a car when the shooting occurred a few minutes after 5 p.m.
The driver of the car raced east on 26th Court after the shooting, jumped the curb on the east side of Avenue S and hit a palm tree head on.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene. The two others were transported to St. Mary's Medical Center.
The identities of the men were not available Saturday night.
Police set up a perimeter and were seeking a "person of interest" with "short twists" in his hair. He was last seen running from near the scene wearing black shorts. The suspect was considered armed, according to police radio reports.
Anquan Jones, 20, who lives off Avenue S in Riviera Beach, said he heard between five and six popping noises but wasn't sure at first whether they were from fireworks or gunshots.
After he heard police sirens, he ran outside and saw a white four-door Buick smashed into the palm tree.
"It does scare me," Jones said. "I have nieces and nephews living with me and I don't want any of us to get caught up in gunfire."
Shortly before dusk a handful of people claiming to possibly be related to the men who were shot came to the scene and tried to get to the car. One man charged under the police tape and had to be physically blocked by police from entering the crime scene.
The shooting occured just two blocks north of where kids in Halloween costumes celebrated in someone's front yard.
"This isn't unusual, unfortunately," said one neighbor about the shooting. "You can't walk out your door without them trying to sell you drugs."
