RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is thinking “safety first” when it comes to Peanut Island.
Buoys will be stationed around the island’s sandbar for the 4th of July.
Deputies are using them to make two safety areas so that they will be able to get through crowds faster in emergencies.
Peanut Island is a popular spot for boaters. Many like to tie their boats together and that can be a problem.
"Sometimes you find as many as 50 to 100 boats rafting together and we can't get inside the sand bar so response is delayed,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Captain Marty Bechtel.
Deputies tested the buoys on Memorial Day and say they were a success.
