RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - There are just hours left during Florida's annual Lobster mini-season. This year, a four-legged friend is helping keep lobster hunters in check and their catches within the law.
"Find it! Check here," commands Officer Caitlyn Kirkland of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission.
She and her K9, Zeus, are in pursuit on board boats all along the South Florida coastline this week. They are hunting for illegal wildlife caught by humans.
Officer Kirkland says the training that she and Zeus go through is just like any other law enforcement K9 team. "We do the same exact training," she said. We just substitute for drugs, wildlife - Deer, turkey, alligator, lobster."
Since midnight, Zeus and Officer Kirkland had been on more than 15 different vessels looking for potential lawbreakers. To be an effective team, Kirkland says, the pair must be together around the clock and be a part of reinforcement training on a weekly basis.
Lobster Mini-Season runs through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday.
