RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - Thursday marks the start of a major revitalization project for the Riviera Beach Marina.
Work is starting on a new event center, restaurant, café, and rooftop terrace at a cost of $375 million. Also, a $4 million makeover will occur at nearby Bicentennial Park.
City leaders hope transforming the marina will make it a bigger tourist destination. Supporters believe the project could become a major economic driver for Riviera Beach.
The city estimates the project will create 500 construction jobs over the next three years, and more than 2,100 permanent jobs.
It's all part of a public-private partnership between the city of Riviera Beach, the community redevelopment agency and Viking Developers.
That partnership didn't come without controversy. Voters had to amend the city charter to allow companies to run businesses at the city-owned marina.
That vote passed by a landslide on March 11, paving the way for the project.
