Ric Bradshaw: PBSO sheriff vents over frustration with media in video aired at law enforcement event

Sheriff calls it a 'speech to boost morale'

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - NewsChannel 5 finds a video of a frustrated Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw which aired at a recent south Florida law enforcement gathering.

In the video, Bradshaw says he won't back down in the face of questions arising from critics and from our joint investigation with the Palm Beach Post.

We examined 15 years of deputy-involved shootings in which wrongdoing or misjudgment by his deputies is rarely if ever, found.

About a minute into the video Sheriff Bradshaw takes aim at our joint investigation.

"Recent media events here where Channel 5 and The Post have tried to literally just beat law enforcement to the ground particularly the sheriff's office," said Bradshaw.

He continued.

"That's not saying some mistakes haven't been made, because there has been. But to say that all law enforcement is the same and all law enforcement is bad because a few mistakes have been made, and even some of those have been blown out of proportion, is inherently bad. I think it's wrong and I'm not going to stand for it."

Our exclusive joint investigation looked at 114 PBSO deputy-involved shootings over 15 years. Nearly all shootings were ruled justified by PBSO and the State Attorney's Office.

"I could be like some of the police officials," said Bradshaw who continued, "and tuck my tail between my legs and say, yeah you know what maybe we need to talk about this and maybe we...no! That's not it and I'm not gonna back up because we have not done anything wrong."

Our investigation uncovered a video from 2013 showing Dontrell Stephens being shot by a PBSO deputy. Stephens was carrying nothing but a cell phone at the time. Stephens, now 22,  is paralyzed for life. The sheriff argued we did not see what happened off camera.

During the 5 minute video Sheriff Bradshaw reinforced his views on how the public should interact with law enforcement.

"This is a simple equation. If you don't try to shoot us, you don't try to stab us, you don't try to run over us with a car and you don't try to beat us up then everything's gonna be fine. It's called comply and then complain. It's a very simple process" said Bradshaw.

Sheriff Bradshaw ended the video by saying he will keep speaking up for, and defending his deputies.

"Why should we succumb to pressure from the outside which is uncalled for just because they think its wrong..when its' not.," said Bradshaw.

NewsChannel 5 spoke with Sheriff Bradshaw Thursday afternoon. The sheriff declined an on camera interview but said his remarks were solely meant to show support for and boost the morale of his deputies.

The sheriff has previously acknowledged policy changes he is putting in place in the wake of our investigation.
