Surprise delivery! Baby wouldn't wait for parents to get to hospital to be born

Dispatchers helped keep family calm

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Ready or not a local couple delivered their baby on the side of a Fort Lauderdale highway. The Palm Beach County parents were rushing to a birthing center in Hollywood and had to pull over on I-595.

"We were on our way to the birthing center and didn't make it in time, I just delivered my child," the father said.

Why they waited for paramedics, dispatchers told the father what to do.

"Without pulling the cord tight, I need you to put the baby in the mother arms and be sure the cord is not wrapped around the baby's neck," said the dispatcher.

"We wiped down the baby and provided some oxygen, mom was in great spirits. The baby was in great health," said Rolando Busto, with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

"We deal with tragedy day in and day out, it's nice when you get a call like this," said Busto.

Mother and baby were taken to Broward Health Medical Center. In shock, but finally calm, the dad got a well-deserved pat on the back.

"You did a very good job Mark, congratulations on your baby girl," said the dispatcher.

The family will soon be head back north this weekend so the baby can meet her big brother.
