SOUTH PALM BEACH, Fla. - A day at the beach turns dangerous for a 50-year-old man who decided to go for a swim Sunday afternoon in South Palm Beach.
James Webber, spokesman for Town of Palm Beach Fire Rescue, said units were dispatched at around 11:30 a.m. to the Omphoy Ocean Resort, just north of Lake Worth Beach, with reports of a man who may have drowned. The man was transported to JFK Regional hospital.
Webber did not give details on the man's condition at the time fire rescue arrived. However, 2 eyewitnesses gave a NewsChannel 5 reporter conflicting statements. The lifeguard on duty said the man, who is a local, was unresponsive when he attempted to administer CPR, but the manager of the Omphoy says the man was fine when first responders arrived.
The lifeguard did say there are rip currents and a strong north sweep in the ocean. Yellow flags were flying near the beach, urging swimmers to use caution.
The incident is under investigation.
