Palm Beach County Sheriff to talk about recent rash of violence in Glades

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, reacting to a recent rash of shootings in western Palm Beach County, has scheduled a news conference at 2:30 this afternoon.

Two people were killed and four were injured in three separate gun-related incidents in the Glades since Sunday.

At 3 p.m. Monday, a man was standing at Pope Court in Pahokee when another man drove up in a gray Dodge Charger, got out with a semi-automatic weapon and fired two rounds, said Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

The shooting victim was driven to Lakeside Medical Center and was later rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center. He is expected to recover from two gunshots to his thigh.

Later in the evening, one person was killed and three others were wounded after a shooting in Belle Glade.

The incident happened about 9:37 p.m. in the 500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. One person, a man of unknown age, was pronounced dead at the scene, Barbera said.

The other shooting victims, all men of unknown ages, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A witness reported seeing a man dressed in all black and armed with a handgun at the scene.

And on Sunday, Shaqoya Butler, 26, of Belle Glade, was shot and killed as she drove through Belle Glade in the early morning hours.

Butler was turning onto Southwest C Street from Southwest 9th Street at about 2:30 a.m., when shots were fired, deputies said. A female passenger in the car, who was not injured, said Butler slumped over the wheel. She was declared dead by emergency medical crews.

While several witnesses were located, none could provide investigators with any leads about who may have been responsible for the shooting, deputies said. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
